The earliest evidence for prehistoric religion in India date back to the late Neolithic in the early Harappan period (5500–2600 BCE).[81][92] The beliefs and practices of the pre-classical era (1500–500 BCE) are called the "historical Vedic religion". Modern Hinduism grew out of the Vedas, the oldest of which is the Rigveda, dated to 1700–1100 BCE.[93] The Vedas center on worship of deities such as Indra, Varuna and Agni, and on the Soma ritual. They performed fire-sacrifices, called yajña, and chanted Vedic mantras but did not build temples or icons.[citation needed] The oldest Vedic traditions exhibit strong similarities to Zoroastrianism and other Indo-European religions.[94]

As stated before, Hinduism is vastly different from most of the major religions that exist in the world today. For example, Hinduism has a strong belief in worshiping a deity through a peripheral such as a statue or picture of the deity the follower is worshipping. To continue, Hinduism could also be said to be polytheistic, a major distinguishing factor amongst the major religions today.

However, Hindus believe that while there are many deities, they are all just different faces of the one god, Brahman. This can also be said about a Hindu’s understanding of other religions, which states that all religions are different means of worshipping the same god, they, the religions, just go by different names. Hinduisim is also different from major religions in that it is almost entirely based on the Indian Subcontinent, with its followers migrating to different parts of the world and taking their religion with them.

1. "The existence of Atman ("the real self"
2. That this atman is caught in a cycle of rebirth, called samsara.
3. That it is the goal of every Hindu to break the cycle of rebirth. This is called moksha.

Hindu's do believe in God or Brahman, he is the ultimate reality who is the reason for life itself. Hindu's do have three primary Gods after Brahman, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Brahman is the God that creates, Vishnu is the God that preserves and Shiva is the god who destroys. These three gods are known as the Trimurti. There is also two other gods that are very popular with the Hindu's Ganesh, the God of knowledge and good fortune and Hanuman the God of loyalty and bravery.
